Abstract:
The numerical perturbation algorithm presented by the author is to couple fluid dynamics effects with mathematical basic schemes (MBS), especially with the most simplest MBS, i.e. first order upwind and second order central schemes for the Navier-Stokes(NS) equations and convective diffusion equation. As a result, many new schemes are obtained and called fluid mechanics basic scheme (FMBS), for convenience and emphasizing MBS coupling with fluid dynamics effects. The main steps of constructing FMBS are that flux and coefficient of convective derivative in MBS are reconstructed as power-series of grid interval and that by splitting resultant scheme above and operating the splitted scheme, the high-order fluid mechanics relation is obtained and that the variables at upstream and downstream nodes are expanded in Taylor series and that by eliminating truncated error terms in the modified differential equation of the reconstructed scheme the undetermined coefficients in the power-series are determined and then the FMBS is obtained. Formulations of FMBS is product of MBS and the numerical perturbation reconstruction functions, that are simple polynomial of (or ), where and are grid Reynolds number and grid CFL number, respectively.FMBS and original MBS utlize the same nodes and are nearly identical simple. But FMBS have higher accurate and larger stable-range than MBS. For example, the most simplest and the most important six FMBS for the convection diffusion (CD) equation are : sixth-order upwind finite-difference (FD) FMBS, dual perturbation (DP) fourth-and eighth-order central FD-FMBS, dual perturbation third- and fifth-order finite volume (FV) central FMBS and sixth upwind FV-FMBS. This six schemes are absolute stability or absolute positive and are non-oscillatory schemes for any values of grid Reynolds number. In the case of one dimension, this six schemes are TVD scheme for any values of grid Reynolds number. However, the same order MBS must use multi-nodes and oscillate on coarse grids, Besides FMBS being directly used to calculate flow, FMBS is also acted as a basic or starting scheme for reconstructing high resolution scheme by self-adjust numerical dissipation. The above six FMBS and others have been used to calculate incompressible flows, compressible flows, mass transfer and Marangoni convection in a falling drop, two phase flows etc., some excellent numerical results are given. For example, FMBS solve lib-driven and buoyancy-driven cavity flows and result in several new Benchmark solutions. The numerical perturbation algorithm and corresponding schemes are also called Gao's algorithm and Gao's schemes. However, the name of FMBS is more reasonable than the numerical perturbation scheme, this is because that FMBS may depict exactly physical connotation of MBS coupling with fluid dynamics effects. Several subjects being worthy of study further are discussed. The present method is also suitable for reconstruction of MBS of other mathematical physics equation (such as the simplified Boltzmann equation, magnetic fluid mechanic equations, KdV-Burgers equation etc.) coupling with physics dynamics effects.

Evaluation of partially premixed flamelet approach in supersonic combustion

Abstract:

Partially premixed flamelet approach has been becoming one of the most promising formulations for modeling and simulating supersonic combustion. A systematic review of the developed history of flamelet approach for supersonic combustion is presented. Two fundamental issues of this approach are summarized, those are, the physical rationality of the flamelet approach for supersonic combustion and its modeling problem. The difficulties of the application of flamelet approach to supersonic combustion are emphasized and the overall considerations needed for modeling the suitable flamelet models for supersonic combustion are presented. This paper gives a reasonable direction for development and application of partially premixed flamelet approach to supersonic turbulent combustion.

ADVANCES OF AEROBRAKING TECHNOLOGY IN THE PLANETARY MISSION

Abstract:
Aerobraking is becoming an efficient technique for the planetary mission. It uses planetary atmosphere drag to slow down the spacecraft and achieve the desired orbit, and this technique that allows reduced propellant mass can minimize the cost of the exploration mission and increase the payload capability. This paper describes the features of aerobraking operations and presents four NASA planetary missions having successfully used aerobraking technique. In particular, research progress in aerodynamics and trajectory simulation during aerobraking is reviewed, and the risks and cost analysis associated with aerobraking are summarized., Focuses in the studies on aerobraking technique are pointed out at the end of paper, and some suggestions about further investigations are also made.

Acoustoelasticity ofsolids is very important in the non-destructive measurement ofstress states of solids, and Professor Pao from Connell Universityhad summarized the progress of acoustoelasticity of solids before1984. In order to advance the investigation of acoustoelasticity,this paper reviews systematically the last twenty-years progressin the theory and measurement technology of acoustoelasicity andits application to the non-destructive stress evaluation in thefields of material science and rock engineering.

Abstract:

The research on theconstitutive models of skeletal muscle has great importance to themuscle-skeletal system as well as the whole sports biomechanics.This article reviews the latest achivements in the study onpassive behaviors of skeletal muscle, including linear-elasticmodel, hyper-elastic model and visco-elastic model. These modelscharacterize the passive responses of skeletal muscle by means ofdifferent theories, and give better descriptions of the behaviorfrom different viewpoints. However, due to the limitation oftheory, any model is not perfect, and thus the authors give basicsummary and make comments about shortcomings and applicability ofeach model.

Mine impact burial prediction from one to three dimensions

Abstract:
The Navy’s mine impact burial prediction model creates a time history of a cylindrical or a noncylindrical mine as it falls through air, water, and sediment. The output of the model is the predicted mine trajectory in air and water columns, burial depth/orientation in sediment, as well as height, area, and volume protruding. Model inputs consist of param- eters of environment, mine characteristics, and initial release. This paper reviews near three decades’ effort on model development from one to three dimensions: (1) one- dimensional models predict the vertical position of the mine’s center of mass (COM) with the assumption of constant falling angle, (2) two-dimensional models predict the COM position in thex,z plane and the rotation around the y-axis, and (3) three-dimensional models predict the COM position in thex,y,z space and the rotation around the x-, y-, and z-axes. These models are verified using the data collected from mine impact burial experiments. The one-dimensional model only solves one momentum equation (in the z-direction). It cannot predict the mine trajectory and burial depth well. The two- dimensional model restricts the mine motion in thex,z plane (which requires motion- less for the environmental fluids) and uses incorrect drag coefficients and inaccurate sediment dynamics. The prediction errors are large in the mine trajectory and burial depth prediction (six to ten times larger than the observed depth in sand bottom of the Monterey Bay). The three-dimensional model predicts the trajectory and burial depth relatively well for cylindrical, near-cylindrical mines, and operational mines such as Manta and Rockan mines.DOI: 10.1115/1.3013823
